I usually hold the cloth up to the light & check the feel of it. Hobby lobby precuts fabric palette is the same brand you get at walmart here in canada, not sure about in the us though I've also seen quilt shops selling fq's by the same company but would not pay more than walmart is charging I'm using the paloma line for my farmer's wife/granddaughter quilt, and the fabric is actually nice.

Research hobby lobby’s practices, especially if you have any women in your family Try michael’s, or any other craft shop if you don’t want to pay fly shop practices. Have seen decent fabrics at joanne, hancock, and hobby lobby had a very nice selection of homespun that i used for shower curtains
