Retsu wanted to see how 4000 years of chinese martial arts, including all the weapon training, compared to history's most deadly swordsman Retsu was a magnificent character who had many great moments and it was of course a fan favourite alongside jack and hanayama, but i do not think him dying can be seen as not deserved or a let down. Retsu could've easily fought musashi bare handed and settled for the imaginary swords, but he wanted to face musashi on the same type of battlefield where he made history.

Killing retsu made musashi's other fights with gaia, hanayama and motobe way more suspenseful when they normally would've been ok, let's just get this over with and have musashi lose to baki. establishing that musashi could actually kill a main character dead permanently was huge, especially when we saw kato survive his fight with dorian. He understood the consequences of losing and he accepted them. Retsu and doyle's actions and dialogue throughout are top notch interactions between two very interesting characters

Post fight it is one of the most heartfelt and genuinely moving moments of hte series.

I had seen the picture of retsu in the hospital and had to see how it happened I just got to musashi killing him and thought, how come he wasn't headified? That definitely should’ve been a harder fight Baki used his imagination training to beat retsu

Now look at where baki was… Retsu mid diffs, remember, oliva has no answer for real skill, something retsu is a master of In the first case, yes, retsu is probably at least comparable to current baki His martial arts genius is now on the same level (ignoring demon brain), he has comically wacky feats, and his general performance against opponents is levels higher than when he was alive.

The Strongest Fighters In Baki Hanma, Ranked

Those doubts follow him everywhere, but they arent something to repress and deny.

Retsu reincarnated in some kind of fantasy world It’s unclear the level of canonicity that series has, but it does put the idea forward that retsu might refuse to come back even if his body was recreated Retsu agreed to fight musashi in a duel with weapons and he lost
