During mello's portion of the story there's a definite tonal shift into major action, with shootouts, kidnappings, missiles, the death note getting into someone else's hands, etc, but after we focus on near we're basically back to the status quo of dueling geniuses. With already stretched housing budget, just can’t afford to pay huge recurring fees every month and year with a possibility that it could increase year after year For now waiting for housing to become more affordable.
It doesn't help that the anime cuts a lot of content that depicts some of mello's atrocities (such as mello continuing to threaten soichiro's and sayu's lives with the death note even after sayu's kidnapping) but even the crimes that he still committed in the anime get a magical hand wave once people remember his sacrifice to stop kira.
